Texas State has a 7-6 all time record against ULM, but have won the previous two meetings
ULM hits the road for the sixth time this season as they head to San Marcos, Texas to take on the Texas State Bobcats. Texas State has a 7-6 all time record against ULM, but have won the previous two meetings.
Texas State is coming off a huge 41-14 victory on the road against Southern Miss, who currently sits at the top of the Sun Belt West standings. Prior to that victory, Texas State had lost five consecutive games. Texas State seeks to have three winning seasons in a row for the first time in school history, and in order to do so, they must win their final two games as well as their bowl game.
ULM, after starting the season 3-1, has now lost six consecutive games. The Warhawks are coming off a 26-14 defeat against South Alabama. ULM currently sits at 3-7 and is eliminated from bowl contention. The season started out well for the Warhawks, but special team issues have severely held them back.
ULM
ULM has had an up-and-down, frustrating season. With so much promising talent on the roster, it is truly a shame that this team is sitting at 3-7. While fingers can be pointed, there are a few key areas that have really held this team back.
Special teams is the main issue that has to be addressed in the off season. ULM is 2-6 on field goal attempts. The lack of execution has left plenty of points on the field, as they sit at 9-24 on fourth down conversion attempts. In multiple games, ULM has had a fair shot at winning but the lack of trust in a kicker has held them back.
Against South Alabama, ULM got off to a hot start going up 14-0 fast. They were shut out after the first quarter.
“We had some big plays pulled back,” said head coach Bryant Vincent. “That’s the difference. It’s something we have to fix.”
Quarterback Aidan Armenta has showed a lot of promise at the quarterback position, but against South Alabama he was only able to put up 82 yards passing with an interception late in the game. Braylon McReynolds has not been himself since returning from an undisclosed injury, he led the way on the ground with 12 carries for 52 yards with a touchdown. Zach Palmer-Smith has stepped things up over the last few games but against South Alabama he was held to just 15 yards on six carries.
Defensively ULM has done about as good as they possibly can, the biggest issue has been penalties and field position.
Consistency is an area that the Warhawks need to improve on as the season comes to a close. ULM has not put together a complete game since their week four match-up with Arkansas State.
“We’re not going to get down,” said Vincent. “This is the long haul. We’re better than that, and we’ve got to show it. We’re not done. We’ve just got to improve our execution.”

Texas State
Texas State has a good football team. In close games they have just come up short. They currently sit at 4-6 overall, while just 1-5 in conference. In their six losses, four of those were one possession games with two going into overtime. Texas State is nationally ranked 104th in total defense, which is a significant drop from 2024 where they ranked 61st. Offensively, they are currently ranked 15th in the country, which is a common trend under a GJ Kinne coached team.
Against Southern Miss, Texas State was electric. They were able to take a 27-0 lead to halftime and were able to seal the deal in the second half.
Quarterback Brad Jackson had a good night where he finished 14-17 passing, with 192 yards and a touchdown. On the ground he added 16 carries for 49 yards and two touchdowns. Star running back Lincoln Pare had another good game where he finished the night with 21 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown.
The Texas State defense was able to shut down the dangerous Southern Miss offense. Southern Miss was held to just 115 yards in the first half. Texas State forced a fumble in the first quarter and was able to march down 86 yards for the touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, freshman cornerback Christopher Jones intercepted Landry Lyddy’s pass and returned it for a 100 yard touchdown, which technically would have to be the longest in school history.
