Southern Miss continued a hot start to the season Thursday night with a 38-35 over Georgia Southern. Southern Miss now 4-2 (2-0 SBC) while Georgia Southern falls to 2-4 (0-2 SBC). While the Georgia Southern did make a comeback in the second half, turnover margined defined the game. The Golden Eagles led the turnover margin in the game three to one.
Georgia Southern started the game with a 7-0 lead courtesy of a two-yard touchdown run via David Mbadinga to cap off a sub three minute drive. Southern Miss quickly answered though on a 50-yard touchdown from quarterback Braylon Braxton to Tychaun Chapman to tie the game up at seven.

Southern Miss was able to punch the ball in once again on a two-yard touchdown run from Jefferey Pittman to end a sub two minute drive to start the second quarter, giving Southern Miss a 14-7 lead. The Golden Eagles scored again, creating separation on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Carl Chester to make it 21-7 Southern Miss. Jeffery Pittman then ran in his second touchdown of the night from two-yards again to make it 28-7 Southern Miss as the first half came to a close.
Georgia Southern did return the punch to start the scoring in second half on a five-yard touchdown run from JC French IV to make it 28-14. Southern Miss quickly answered though, with a score of their own, a three-yard touchdown run from Matt Jones, moving the score to 35-14. One drive later, Marcus Sanders Jr. caught a 39-yard touchdown pass to again cut the lead and make it 35-21.
After a Southern Miss field goal, and Camden Brown 26-yard touchdown from Georgia Southern, the USM lead was cut to 38-28 with less than seven minutes remaining. After a two-yard touchdown run from JC French IV to make it 38-35 things got real interesting. However, after a failed onside kick and penalty USM was able to kneel out the remaining clock for a victory.

Southern Miss quarterback Braylon Braxton went for 237 passing yards and two touchdowns while Georgia Southern quarterback JC French IV went for 313 passing yards, two touchdowns, but three interceptions to go along with it.
The Southern Miss defense on the ground was very solid as Georgia Southern’s rushing attack was once again sub-par only going for 82 rushing yards and less than three yards per carry on the game.
Jeffery Pittman was the stand out skill position player for USM as he went for 140 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Georgia Southern’s Camden Brown also had a great game with 158 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Charles Huff is now 14-5 (9-1 SBC) in his last 19 games he’s coached including an SBC title with Marshall. Huff has proved to be one of the most impressive coaches in the nation over the past two seasons.

Southern Miss will be back in action at Louisiana next week at 5 PM EST for a Sun Belt West clash in Lafayette, while Georgia Southern will host Georgia State at 7 PM EST once again from Statesboro. Both games can be found on ESPN+.
