Troy 91 Southern Miss 65
After a close first 10 minutes that featured six lead changes, an Austin Cross 3-pointer with 7:42 left in the first half gave Troy (12-6, 5-1 Sun Belt) the lead for good in an 91-65 victory over Southern Miss (11-8, 5-2 Sun Belt) on Wednesday night at Trojan Arena.
Cobi Campbell led all scorers with 30 points, including a 6-for-9 performance from 3-point range. Israel Hart paced Southern Miss off the bench with 12 points.

“It was a great all-around win for our guys,” Troy head coach Scott Cross said after the game. “We did a good job defensively. Did a pretty solid job on the boards. Offensively, we struggled at the beginning of the game and then Cobi started going…he was cooking tonight and just kind of transcended the rest of the team.”
It was a career night for Campbell, a redshirt junior out of Puyallup, Washington. He set career highs with 30 points and six made 3-pointers. Outside of the conference opener against Marshall, Campbell had been shooting about 33% from beyond the arc, but he surpassed his previous career best twice during that stretch.
“It just felt good early in the game and, you know, just try to stay in attack mode and, you know, keep finding rhythm shots,” Campbell said. “So, I mean, it’s just one of those things where it just keeps going throughout the night.”
Junior forward Victor Valdes added 19 points, marking his 14th double-digit scoring performance of the season.
“I just think we [are] in a good momentum as a team,” Valdes said. “We got Cobi that’s making shots…Carrington [is] getting rebounds and steals, you know, impacting every time. It’s just fun to play this way and just have this momentum right now.”
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Southern Miss and was its first defeat since a 90-62 loss in Baton Rouge, Louisiana against LSU.
Hart, a redshirt senior from Midwest City, Oklahoma, recorded his sixth double-digit scoring effort of the season and his third in the past four games.
Southern Miss was held to 3-for-20 shooting from 3-point range, just its second game this season shooting below 20% from beyond the arc.
Troy took care of the ball, as Southern Miss recorded only four steals, its lowest total since the LSU game.
One bright spot for the Golden Eagles was the play of junior forward Djahi Binet, who was a forced in the paint. The Nice, France native recorded 11 rebounds and 10 points, his fourth double-double in his last five games and fifth overall. The transfer from Alcorn State had six double-doubles in his two seasons with the Braves.

Southern Miss will continue their four-game road swing on Saturday, as they travel to San Marcos to face Texas State. Troy will look to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the conference, hosting Arkansas State.
