First-year defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson has been named interim coach
Coastal Carolina’s athletic director, Chance Miller, announced Sunday that head football coach Tim Beck has been terminated, effective immediately. First-year defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson has been named interim coach.
“After a comprehensive review of our entire football program and its trajectory, I’ve determined a change is needed moving forward,” Miller said. “We are grateful to Coach Beck for his efforts the past three seasons. We certainly wish Coach and his family well in their future endeavors. Our expectation for this football program is to win the Sun Belt conference championship and compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff, and that will guide us in our search for our next head coach.”
Beck joined the Chanticleers in December of 2022, after serving as NC State’s offensive coordinator from 2020–2022. He took over a program previously led by Jamey Chadwell, who went 31–6 from 2019–2022 and delivered three consecutive bowl appearances and a 2020 Sun Belt title. Over his three seasons in Myrtle Beach, Beck posted a 20–18 record, finishing the 2025 regular season at 6–6 and ending on a three-game losing streak, capped by a 59–10 loss to James Madison on Saturday.
The Chanticleers went 8–5 in Beck’s first season in 2023 before slipping to 6–7 last fall. Despite the decline, Coastal Carolina reached bowl eligibility in all three seasons under Beck, appearing in the Hawaii Bowl in 2023 and the Myrtle Beach Bowl in 2024. Defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson will lead the Chanticleers in their upcoming bowl game, which has yet to be determined.
This was Beck’s first head coaching gig in college football. The former UCF quarterback has coached at various high schools and colleges as an assistant since 1988. The 59-year-old coached throughout the Power Four since 2005, with Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio State, Texas and NC State before taking the head coaching job at Coastal.
Coastal Carolina will begin its national search for a successor immediately, according to Miller.
