The Georgia State Panthers travel up to Norfolk to face the Old Dominion Monarchs in a divisional tilt
The 2025 season comes to a close for the Georgia State Panthers weekend as they travel up to Norfolk to face the Old Dominion Monarchs in a divisional tilt on Saturday. Georgia State is looking to end what has been a disastrous season on a high note with a win, while Old Dominion is seeking their fifth straight win to cap off the season and improve their bowl position.
The Panthers have lost two of the last three games against the Monarchs, and trail in the overall series with a 1-5 record. They hope to avoid losing three straight to Old Dominion. Georgia State will also be playing for a chance to snap their nine game losing streak, their last win coming on September 13th over Murray State.
The Monarchs are seeking to solidify their second-place spot in the Sun Belt East, currently sitting at a 5-2 conference record and seeking their best finish since rejoining the Sun Belt in 2022. Old Dominion is a lock to head to their first bowl game since 2023 where they lost an overtime thriller to Western Kentucky.
Old Dominion
After losing big to eventual Sun Belt East Champion James Madison, the Monarchs have outscored their opponents 133-37 and are in the midst of a four-game winning streak.
The Monarchs have relied heavily on their rushing attack the last two weeks, with sophomore quarterback Colton Joseph lighting up the box score with his arm and legs. Joseph has gone 22-for-38 with 287 passing yards and two touchdowns, adding 334 rushing yards with three touchdowns on the ground in his last two games.
Old Dominion sits second in the Sun Belt for rushing offense, behind only James Madison, and 7th in all FBS overall. The Monarchs are poised to give Georgia State a heavy dose of the run against their 126th ranked rushing defense, third lowest in the conference.
The Monarch defense has been staunch the last four games, allowing only 37 total points and holding opponents to 10 points or less in the last three matchups. Leading the charge is freshman linebacker Jackson Forrest who has 15 tackles (6 solo) with 1.5 sacks over his last two games of work.
Old Dominion fumbled the ball five times against Georgia Southern last weekend but only lost it once.
Georgia State
The end is near for the Panthers on a season that could not have gone much worse. They will miss bowl contention for the second straight season and currently holding a record of 4-19 under second year head coach Dell McGee.
Cameran Brown returned from a shoulder injury he suffered against Coastal Carolina to face Troy on the road. Brown only lasted one half against the Trojans, suffering an injury on what would be ruled targeting and was replaced by senior Christian Veilleux who would remain the quarterback for the rest of the game. Veilleux, who hadn’t seen any action since Week One against Ole Miss, went 19-for-38 while passing for 303 yards and one touchdown.
If Brown cannot go against the Monarchs this weekend, it’ll most likely be Christian Veilleux starting the final game of the season, and his college career. Having played in just two games this season, Veilleux has amassed 355 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s also rushed seven times for 58 yards and has yet to be sacked.
Even with the bad record, Georgia State is no stranger to hogging the ball. They have 344 minutes of possession time all season, putting them 49th in all of FBS. The key to victory for the Panthers is to string together a couple of those methodical drives and wear down the Monarch defense.
