The Monarchs rolled to a 47–7 rout in front of their home crowd
With 61 new players on its roster, Coastal Carolina arrived in Norfolk as a team in transition, while Old Dominion made sure the Chanticleers left with bruises — and a reminder of who holds the belt. Behind quarterback Colton Joseph’s five total touchdowns and a defense that suffocated Coastal from start to finish, the Monarchs rolled to a 47–7 rout in front of their home crowd.
First Quarter — Setting the Tone
ODU received the opening kickoff and struck first on its opening drive. Quarterback Colton Joseph capped the opening drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladdin, giving the Monarchs an early 7–0 lead.
The defense immediately followed with a statement. On Coastal’s first offensive series, the Monarch front collapsed the pocket, forcing a quick three-and-out and setting the tone for what would become a long day for Tad Hudson and the Chanticleers’ offensive line.
Later in the quarter, Riley Callaghan drilled a 27-yard field goal to make it 10–0. Through one quarter, ODU controlled tempo, dictated physicality, and established itself in all three phases.
Second Quarter — The Floodgates Open
The second quarter was where ODU truly put the belt to Coastal’s backside. On the first play of the period, Joseph launched a deep strike to Ke’Travion Hargrove for an 80-yard touchdown — the first catch and touchdown of Hargrove’s career. The home crowd erupted as the Monarchs extended their lead to 17–0.

Joseph wasn’t done. Midway through the quarter, he found Gladdin for a 13-yard touchdown, then hit him again from 10 yards out later in the period. Callaghan added a 34-yard field goal, and the defense delivered a key turnover: Hudson was intercepted by Mario Easterly, giving ODU a short field that led to more points.
By halftime, the scoreboard told the story. ODU led 34–0, outgaining Coastal 356–77. Joseph had thrown for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns, and the Monarchs averaged 9.4 yards per play. Coastal, meanwhile, averaged just 2.3 yards per play, committed two turnovers, and couldn’t sustain a single drive.
Third Quarter — The Knockout
Old Dominion came out of the locker room swinging. On the opening drive of the second half, Joseph saw daylight and took off — sprinting 50 yards untouched for his fifth touchdown of the day. If Coastal had any hope left, that run buried it. The score pushed the lead to 41–0 less than three minutes into the quarter.
Coastal’s offense continued to sputter, unable to generate anything against ODU’s front seven. By game’s end, the Chanticleers would rush 37 times for just 81 yards, an average of 2.2 yards per carry. The Monarch defense registered four sacks, forced a turnover on a strip sack, and kept Coastal behind the chains all afternoon.
Later in the quarter, Callaghan added a 22-yard field goal, stretching the lead to 44–0. The only remaining question was how emphatically ODU would close it out.
Fourth Quarter — Finishing the Job
Coastal finally broke through early in the fourth quarter. With 12:20 remaining, Hudson found Cameron Wright for a 3-yard touchdown, capping a rare sustained drive. It would be the Chanticleers’ only score of the day.
ODU responded with one final drive, capped by a 26-yard Callaghan field goal with under two minutes left to lock in the 47–7 final. Even with second-stringers rotating in, the Monarch defense didn’t ease up. Coastal gained just 10 yards on its last possession, a fitting end to a game defined by Old Dominion’s physicality and precision.
Joseph finished with 315 passing yards, four touchdowns through the air, and one on the ground, distributing the ball across multiple weapons. Trequan Jones led the ground attack with 98 rushing yards on 14 carries, while Joseph added 66 himself. Hargrove’s lone catch went for 80 yards and a score, and Gladdin hauled in three touchdowns in a breakout performance.

A Message Sent
For Coastal Carolina, Saturday was a harsh reality check. Head Coach Tim Beck didn’t sugarcoat what he saw.
“It’s one conference loss. We can’t let it be bigger than it is,” Beck said. “It was ugly, there’s no question about it.”
For Old Dominion, it was a statement. Every unit — offense, defense, and special teams — executed with control and aggression.
From Joseph’s opening touchdown to the final kneel-down, the Monarchs dictated the pace, dominated the trenches, and turned turnovers into points. In a Sun Belt clash where one team was rebuilding and the other was asserting itself, ODU left no doubt.
The belt stayed in Norfolk — and Coastal felt every lash.
The Monarchs (4-1) will play in Huntington, W.Va., on Saturday, October 11, 2025, against the Marshall Thundering Herd kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
