LSU defeats Coastal Carolina 5-3, clinching 8th national title
Omaha, Neb.– The LSU Tigers defeated Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon, 5-3, to secure its eighth national title, and second in three years.
The wind did not seem to let up at Charles Schwab Field, gusts reaching up to 25 mph throughout the course of the contest. It was another hot one, this time for a potential title game that saw the Chanticleers with their backs against the wall.
Another big-time pitching matchup was in store, as Coastal Carolina ace Jacob Morrison got the ball to try and send the series to a third game. LSU’s Anthony Eyanson had some big shoes to fill, as rotation counterpart Kade Anderson pitched masterfully in the Tigers’ 1-0 victory the night before. Eyanson is no clear #2, however, as he ranked third in the country in strikeouts with 143 coming into the day (Anderson ranks first with 180).
Immediately there were fireworks. Coastal head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the bottom of the first inning for “arguing balls and strikes,” per the NCAA. Schnall and home plate umpire Angel Campos got into a heated exchange after a pitch to Coastal third baseman Walker Mitchell was called a strike. Campos warned the Coastal dugout, and when Schnall asked for an explanation he was tossed. Schnall then received an extra two-game suspension for allegedly bumping a field umpire and sending him to the ground, a claim that Schnall vehemently denied in his postgame press conference.
In the exchange, Coastal first base coach Matt Schilling was also tossed and issued a three-game suspension. Assistant coaches are prohibited from expressing themselves to umpires, as per the NCAA rulebook. Both Schnall and Schilling are set to serve out their suspensions at the beginning of the 2026 campaign.
Despite the chaos, the Chanticleers were able to strike first. Coastal designated hitter Dean Mihos left the yard for a solo home run in the bottom of the second, putting the Chants up 1-0.
Eyanson then settled in, tossing five-straight scoreless frames to give his team a chance. Eyanson would leave the game after a 7.2 inning, nine strikeout performance.
LSU, who was only able to muster up one run in Saturday’s contest (albeit enough to secure the victory), would not be held at bay in Game 2. Designated hitter Ethan Frey put the Tigers on the board, doubling to left field and tying up the ballgame at one run apiece.
The fourth inning was the turning point for the Tigers, as LSU was able to load the bases to begin the frame and capitalize on a pair of two-RBI singles by outfielders Chris Stanfield and Derek Curiel.
Morrison would leave the game after just 3.2 innings, a heartbreaking end to what has been a stupendous year for the 6-foot-8 righty.
Coastal would get two back in the seventh, a two-run shot by Wells Sykes to cut the deficit in half, 5-3. But the Tigers would not be denied, as Sykes would hit into a game-ending, championship-clinching double play in the bottom of the ninth. The LSU Tigers secured their eighth national championship in program history– and second in three years.
Coastal Carolina finishes the season 56-13, the most wins in program history. It is the program’s sixth season of 50 wins or more, and its third of 55+ (all of which have come in the past 16 years). The Chanticleers will likely return a solid core of its CWS Finals roster in 2026.
And with that, the 2025 NCAA Baseball Season has come to an end.
